Mobile, adaptable, ambitious, tech savvy and empathetic. These traits form the ethos of “Tomorrow’s Lawyers”, a philosophy that Michael embraces. Michael welcomes the challenge of technology-driven change and disruption, and is comfortable working from any location (or time zone!). It’s all about adopting whatever method is needed to make the law more accessible, understandable and affordable for clients and the community at large.
Business and commercial law is Michael’s thing. He loves a good contract – it’s a logic puzzle and part of a bigger story. For Michael, a client or transaction is never just ‘a file’. He cares about his clients, their visions and goals, and takes the journey with them.
Graduating in 2008, Michael began his career in Dunedin at a large South Island firm. In 2011, he moved to the UK to join the in-house legal team at Ricardo PLC where he combined his interests in law, engineering and high performance cars (check out their website!). Michael’s can-do attitude and simplified approach to law saw him reinvigorate Ricardo’s legal team. Working within a dynamic global company, he also gained valuable experience of the challenges businesses face and the need for legal professionals to stay fresh and relevant in an ever-changing environment.
Michael returned home to Nelson and Knapps in 2016, eager to contribute his skills and ethos. You may spot him around town on his beloved Dutch style bicycle or in a classic Citroen 2CV, taking the slow and steady approach to appreciate the small pleasures of life in the Nelson region.
And in case you missed the family resemblance, Michael is also proof that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – son of Gary – he’s a second generation Knappsapien!
