Notice of Upcoming Law Change – Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill

There is currently a Bill before Parliament which will amend the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 to require smoke alarms and insulation in residential rental properties along with other tenancy improvements.  Included is the right of the Chief Executive to investigate alleged breaches and require and collect information from Landlords including records of inspections, maintenance, repairs and correspondence with the Tenant.  It is intended that the provision relating to smoke alarms will come into force on 1 July 2016 and the insulation provisions on 1 July 2019.
